Well, it should be alienating; or rather, it should alert you to the alienation endemic to life. This is what good science fiction -- e.g. Octavia Butler, if you know her -- is supposed to do; create a situation in which the distancing factor of the presumed "setting" permits us to more fully appreciate the horrors of our condition while only belatedly realizing that they are, in fact, our horrors. Hopefully this little moment of dissonance will make every work of sci-fi you read for a while uncomfortably possible...;)
