My Name is LUCA

My name is LUCA
I live in the early sea
I think you've seen me before, yeah,
In fact I think you're me

If you've got something really keen
Some kind of protein, some kind of gene
Just don't keep it to yourself
Just don't keep it to yourself
Just don't keep it to yourself...

I can make some proteins.
I can't make them very well.
But sharing makes a heaven here
where we could have had a hell.

These proteins' structures will carry on
Even after the code is gone
They're the footprints that I leave
They're the footprints that I leave
They're the footprints that I leave...

(Tune here for those of you who didn't grow up with Suzanne Vega...)

Second Draft Progress

+50%

I was originally hoping to be submitting it to critiquers now, so this represents a 100% slip; nonetheless, I'm pretty satisfied with the progress. I was just pulling the March 1st deadline out of the air anyway, and the fear that the thing will just bog down forever is never far away...

Nilly

The third and last of my stories in the Numbers Quartet project (with Stephen Gaskell, Aliette de Bodard, and Nancy Fulda), "Nilly", went up yesterday (while I was reveling at Fasnacht). There's a comment thread for the story here... but don't go there first as it may contain spoilers (or, at least, interpretation-spoilers).
